{"id":1582,"date":"2016-06-20T12:36:20","date_gmt":"2016-06-20T16:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jungwon.kim\/blog\/?p=1582"},"modified":"2016-06-20T12:36:30","modified_gmt":"2016-06-20T16:36:30","slug":"mpp-vs-clusters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.jungwon.kim\/?p=1582","title":{"rendered":"MPP vs Clusters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/top500.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">top500<\/a> list uses a slightly different distinction between an MPP and a cluster, as explained in<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1109\/MCSE.2005.34\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dongarra et al.<\/a> paper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[a cluster is a] parallel computer system comprising an integrated collection of independent nodes, each of which is a system in its own right, capable of independent operation and derived from products developed and marketed for other stand-alone purposes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Compared to a cluster, a modern MPP (such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blue_Gene\" rel=\"nofollow\">IBM Blue Gene<\/a>) is more tightly-integrated: individual nodes cannot run on their own and they are connected by a custom network (like a multidimensional torus). But, similarly to a cluster, an MPP doesn&#8217;t have shared memory.
